Have you decided to finally build a new website for your business in 2019? Do you feel like hiring an agency to do so? Or are you planning to do it all yourself, and try your best not to lose your mind AND money in the process?
No matter the answer to these questions, the main goal is to have a website that is aligned with your branding that gives you more bang for your buck, and stitch your strategy together instead of ending up in a hot mess.
If you read this post where I talk about the preparations you have to do before the web design process, you will know that I emphasize time and time again how your website is your most powerful marketing tool.
This is where I come in.
Let me enlighten you through this article before you jump into building your website. Below, you will find 5 questions that will make decision-making easy as pie.
So get a pen and paper, and let’s get started!
1. Does everyone in your business agree with your strategy?
Before jumping into building a new website, you must refer back to your business strategy and make sure it’s finalized and polished. And, if you have people working for you, it’s best to gather them and work together on a more concrete business strategy, which includes branding.
If you don’t have everything stitched together in a cohesive manner and you dive into website building, it won’t have a solid foundation to stand on.
Or if you’re a solopreneur, make sure you have brainstormed on your own or have consulted several people in the field. No man is an island!
This way, when everything is put to paper and is black-and-white, you will have a framework to build your website on and the next couple of steps will be much easier.
2. Have you finalized who your target audience is?
As with number one above, when you have finally completed a cohesive business strategy, plus your branding, you will also have decided on your target audience.
Your strategy will revolve around your audience and your sitemap will depend on the characteristics of your target clients, so if your business strategy isn’t that concrete, and you decide halfway through building your website that you’re actually not so sure about who your audience is, everything will fall apart!
It’s basically like planning a European trip and having everything prepared, only to change your mind at the airport and decide to fly to Asia instead. You can’t make that impromptu change, and it’s virtually impossible to make it in time.
3. Do you want a pre-coded website or from scratch?
I know a lot of solopreneurs who have opted to try to build their websites on their own using pre-coded templates. There’s nothing wrong with them. In fact, a pre-coded template (usually on WordPress) only costs an average of $27, and pre-coded WordPress sites make up about 29% of the internet.
So yes, that could work… but it depends on how you want to scale your business.
Pre-coded websites have limitations. If your site has a simple sitemap and the pages aren’t too complicated, you can work on it using a quick page-builder.
But then again, that can get really messy in the long run, especially if you plan on having constant changes in your site.
So, unless you are or you have a really good user interface designer, it’s best to build it from scratch!
4. Does it need to be perfect now, like ASAP?
Before the internet, people received their box of samples off the print shop, skimmed through them to check if they’re perfect, and let out a sigh of relief if there weren’t any cringe-worthy graphic disasters or grammatical errors.
That was then. Today, in the digital age, you can change or update something with a couple of taps on the keyboard or on your smartphones. Besides, it’s better to have something up than nothing at all.
There is literally no apparent NEED to get it perfect the first hour your website goes live. As long as it follows your branding strategy, you’re good to go.
5. Do you understand what it takes to build and maintain it?
Once your website is up and running, you have to understand that it doesn’t stop there. Once it’s live, you have to continuously update, maintain, and manage it.
It’s a daily grind, but if you’re a solopreneur who plans on multitasking and doing everything solo, this will take so much of your time that you won’t have time for other things that matter too.
The continuous maintenance is a laborious effort, and unless you have more time in a day than most people, maybe hiring a team is the better option. Having technical people in your team can save you from headaches!
At the end of the day, always remember that user experience for your website is EVERYTHING these days. Understanding these things from the get-go will make it easier for your brand to establish its position in the industry, and eventually achieve the most cost-effective and powerful website that speaks your brand all too well.
